Exeter subjects ranked in the world top 100

A wide range of subjects at the University of Exeter have been ranked amongst the world’s best, according to an influential international league table.

Twelve subjects have been ranked among the top 100 globally in the latest Shanghai Rankings, released recently.

Ecology is the highest placed subject, placed 6th in the world, while five other subjects – Geography (15th), Atmospheric Science (26), Public Administration (33rd), Mining and Mineral Engineering (37th) and Environmental Science and Engineering (49th) - also appear in the top 50.

Water Resources is placed in the 51-75 range, while other notable entries are Oceanography, Earth Sciences, Political Sciences, Education and Hospitality & Tourism Management, which all feature in the 76-100 ranking range.

In total, Exeter features in the 27 of the 54 subjects listed in the latest edition of the Shanghai Rankings Global Rankings of Academic Subjects.

Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter said: “We are naturally delighted that the excellent work and research conducted across our subjects has been recognised in these rankings. They reflect the extent to which our world-leading academics engage with some of the key issues being tackled by researchers on a global stage, and are a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at our campuses in both Cornwall and Exeter.”

For the new table, more than 4,000 universities were ranked in five different fields: the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.

The results were determined by measuring the quantity, quality, and impact of research at each institution, as well as the extent of international collaboration and the number of staff recognised with awards.
