Many of our students undertake a work placement as part of their course. Placements can involve working on short projects for 6-10 weeks or 3-4 months, or a full year in industry.

Our bright, enthusiastic students are keen to demonstrate and develop their skills and bring a fresh perspective to the workplace. Feedback from employers has been consistently positive and many students are invited back to take up a graduate position with their placement host.

If you are interested in setting up a work placement and want to find out more, please contact our employability team.

Several of our courses allow students to engage with businesses through collaborative work on a project.

Companies can put forward specific areas of their business that they wish to be researched, or express an interest in working with students, but perhaps with no specific collaboration conceptualised.

Students can then suggest a product or a service that they feel may benefit the company, ascertained from their project research.

What we need

  • A suitable project - it must be related to one of our disciplines.
  • A contact within your organisation who is able to communicate with the student and/or a project supervisor at an appropriate level for the project.
  • Notice of your interest in offering a project before the Autumn term begins in September.

When projects take place

Undergraduate student projects run from the Autumn term (September to mid-December) through until May, when the student’s final report must be submitted. Postgraduate (Masters) student projects can take place at different times of year. If you are interested in working with a postgraduate student, please contact us for further details.
