We start with an introduction to the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and some of the natural metrics on the space. Then we will see how combinatorial models for the metrics are used to develop a kind of symbolic coding for geodesic flows on the space similar to continued fraction expansions for the geodesic flow on the modular surface.
