Thursday 27 Aug 2020[Journal Club] Title: Extracting chromospheric activity structure on solar-like stars

Amy Goodsall - University of Exeter

Zoom 11:00-11:30

The talk provides an overview of a possible method for extracting chromospheric activity structure based on a star’s low resolution magnetic field. Using a low resolution magnetogram of our sun produced by spherical harmonic decomposition we can determine how useful the magnetogram is as a proxy to an estimate of the structure of the sun’s chromospheric activity, by comparing the two directly. Depending on how well the sun’s activity distribution can be estimated from this, we can use this method for other solar-like stars. This talk should provide an understanding of this method to estimate the distribution of activity on solar-like stars, but the talk will also cover to what extent this method is viable.
