We develop a mathematical framework for phase stability of systems with slowly varying phase dynamics, in terms of slow-fast finite-time dynamical systems. Within this framework, we formalise and generalise the stabilisation phenomenon that is known to occur in Adler equations subject to slowly varying additive forcing. This phenomenon may be regarded as a deterministic and finite-time counterpart to the well-known phenomenon of almost sure asymptotic-time stabilisation of cyclic processes by white noise. Accordingly, our result may have implications for the investigation of the underlying physics behind thermodynamically open oscillatory processes exhibiting phase stability.
