Thursday 27 Jun 2019The Role of Edge Computing in 5G and Beyond

Prof. Ning Wang - University of Surrey

Laver LT3 14:00-15:00

Abstract: This talk will introduce the technical work carried out at the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), University of Surrey on 4K/4K+ mobile video content delivery with user Quality of Experiences (QoE) assurance in Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) enabled 5G networks. Specific techniques have been designed and developed for both video on demand (VoD) and live streaming application scenarios at the global Internet scale. The technical achievements have been published recently at prestigious IEEE journals such as JSAC and also featured IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Technology News. Following these, the talk will further provide an outlook on how edge computing will play an essential role in various application domains in future network environments.

Bio: Prof. Ning Wang received his PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from University of Surrey, and he is currently with the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) hosted at Surrey. He has been the principle investigator of EU and UK national research projects in the areas of future networks, 5G, content delivery, network management and smart-grid communications. Since 2013 Prof. Wang has been leading a team at 5GIC on the development of 5G network edge intelligence and core network development. Till now Prof. Wang has published over 130 research papers and his research outputs have featured IEEE ComSoc Technology News three times. Prof. Wang’s research interests generally include future network design including 5G, content/information centric networking, SDN/NFV, Quality of Services/Experiences and Internet-of-Things applications.
