Exeter hosts Diderot Mathematical Forum 2013 – Mathematics of Planet Earth

Leading Mathematicians from the University of Exeter will host a European-wide prestigious online conference on Tuesday, December 17.

Exeter is one of three European universities to host the biennial Diderot Mathematical Forum, which this year focuses on the topic “Mathematics of Planet Earth”.

Professor Peter Cox, Professor David Stephenson, Professor Mat Collins and Professor Mark Baldwin will deliver a series of lectures centred on the relationship between mathematics and climate change.

The lectures are tailored to be accessible to all audiences, and will be held in Lecture Theatre 004 of the Harrison Building, on Exeter’s Streatham Campus.

Mathematicians from both the Universities of Zagreb and Rijeka in Croatia, and the Free University of Berlin, will also give talks on the applications of mathematics to various topics related to planet Earth. The conference will end with a round table discussion held simultaneously in all the three cities.

All the talks will be broadcast over the Internet, as well as recorded to be available online later.

The cycle of conferences "Diderot Mathematical Forum" was introduced by the European Mathematical Society (EMS) in 1996.  This year’s event is also a part of the Unesco year Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013.

Lectures from Exeter will be available online for viewing, while the full programme of lectures is available here.
