ASPIRE - Accrediting Staff Professionalism in Research-Led Education

Staff within the college are actively encouraged to gain fellowships through the ASPIRE scheme. It is a framework for developing and accrediting staff who teach and support students’ learning in our research-led environment. Accredited by the Higher Education Academy it offers you the opportunity to gain both a University of Exeter ASPIRE Fellowship and the correlating HEA Fellowship at one of four levels: Associate: Fellow; Senior Fellow or Principal Fellow.

Detecting the pathology specific chemo-mechanics of epithelial tissue in dysplastic Barrett’s oesophagus using light scattering - Physics - PhD (Funded) (CRUK/EPSRC) £14,553 for 4 years Fri 15th Sep 2017 Oesophageal cancer is the 8th most common cancer in males in UK and one with dismal prognosis – only 12% of patients survive it for more than 10 years. We propose to develop a new approach to investigate the heterogeneity in structure, elasticity and composition of epithelial tissue in Barrett’s oesophagus.

The goal is to extend the range of sea-states in which existing wave limited maritime operations can be safely carried out. Important examples of these operations are the launch and recovery from a mother-ship of small craft, manned and unmanned air vehicles and submersibles. The PhD project will focus on the creation of a control scheme for the hoist mechanism and the development of a ‘disturbance observer’ to provide robustness to the closed-loop system.
