Experts from Exeter will be taking part in the GDST Engineering and Architecture Conference

Exeter experts take part in pioneering conference to encourage more women into Engineering

Engineering experts from the University of Exeter are set to take part in a pioneering conference designed to encourage women to consider a career in the subject.

Representatives from the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences will participate in the inaugural Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) Engineering and Architecture Conference, in Bath.

The conference, which takes place from 14-16 March, will see more than 100 Sixth Form female students from across the country discover more about the opportunities a career in engineering or architecture can bring.

The three day residential event is designed for Year 12 pupils, who are at the point of considering university courses and their future career possibilities, to give them an insight into what it is like to study Engineering or Architecture, and hear from employers in both fields.

Dr Gavin Tabor, a Senior Lecturer in Engineering, Exeter Engineering Alumna and member of University Council Sarah Buck, and current 4th Year MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering student, Emma Scott, will be taking part in some of the sessions being run as part of the conference.

Recent research by the Architects’ Journal showed that just 12% of partners in Architecture practices are female, while figures from the Institution of Engineering and Technology reveal only 7% of engineers are women - the lowest proportion in Europe.

The programme will include interactive workshops and career discussion sessions led by industry leaders, such as Airbus, BAE Systems and CrossRail; a key note speech from Jenny Body, the first female President of the Royal Aeronautical Society; and discussions with inspiring female engineers and architects.
