Exeter students had the chance to network with 60 employers who helped to shape the ITMB degree

Exeter ITMB students network with top employers

Exeter IT Management for Business (ITMB) students recently attended the annual ITMB Student Event South run by e-skills UK - a unique opportunity to interact with employers.

Hosted by CA Technologies at their offices in Berkshire, the event gave students valuable careers advice, coaching skills and access to real life business situations. Nearly 200 students from 10 universities across the UK met with 60 employers including CA Technologies, Credit Suisse, HP, Logica, Procter & Gamble, and PWC.

Exeter students had the chance to take part in skills sessions, networking events and competitions. Inspirational talks from industry experts explored the different careers technology can offer. ITMB alumni were also on hand to share their perspectives on working in the industry, and provide tips to students on applying for graduate positions.

The competitions were a key focus of the day, and a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their project management, team working and communication skills – all highly valued by employers. Team competitions included the first year Procter & Gamble Olympic Challenge poster competition, and the second/final year Sopra Group Challenge presentations. There were also two Procter & Gamble ‘spot prizes’ to be awarded to outstanding students, while the star prize of the event was the chance to run CA Technologies for a day.

Teams from Exeter came second in both the first year and second/third year competitions with each team winning £250. Tom Shopland (first year ITMB) was awarded a Procter & Gamble 'spot prize', winning £50 and an invitation to Procter & Gamble Insight Days. Kim Hutchinson and Elina Desaine were two of the four students shortlisted to shadow the CEO of CA Technologies for the day.

The ITMB degree has been specially developed in association with employers to give students an excellent mix of both business and IT skills, as well as highly sought after team working and communication skills, putting graduates in a strong position to succeed in today’s competitive job market.

"The ITMB degree itself differs from other computing and business courses because it is essentially a ‘hybrid’, bringing the best parts of IT and business together." said Bob Clift, Director of HE Programmes at e-skills UK.

"Employer support in the form of events, clinics, projects, work placements and lectures from industry experts are a major benefit of the course and help ensure ITMB students really stand out from the crowd."
