South West and London Universities join forces for Systems and Control seminar series

The College's Systems and Control group welcomed colleagues and students from Southwest England and London to another edition of the yearly BELS (Bath, Exeter, London and Southampton) Control Seminar Series.

On the 6th and 7th January, 2011 between twenty and twenty-five researchers and postgraduate students of more than ten nationalities from the Universities of Bath, Exeter and Southampton as well as the Imperial College London attended a number of very interesting presentations on recent developments in Systems and Control Theory and its applications.

Topics in the presentations covered many diverse areas of Systems and Control Theory. They included:

  • Model Reduction for Infinite-dimensional Systems (Mark Opmeer, Bath)
  • Multiple Model Adaptive Control (Mark French, Southampton)
  • New Methods for Quadratic Programming and Model Predictive Control (Eric Kerrigan, Imperial College London)
  • Control applications in Wave Energy Converters (Mike Belmont, Exeter).

The presentations led to many very fruitful discussions and gave all participants, in particular the PhD students, a very good overview of the various activities of the Systems and Control community in Southwest England and London. The meetings may well also lead to future collaborations between the Universities involved.

Date: 11 January 2011
