Celebrating Maths at the University of Exeter

Celebrating Exeter Maths

The Maths Department at Exeter is really proud of the achievements of our staff and students.

For example, did you know that:

  • Maths is home to the University's Best Lecturer, Gihan Marasingha, as voted in the 2014 Teaching Awards
  • Maths has risen to 8th in the 2015 Guardian subject league tables
  • Better feedback and faster turnaround times in maths led to a 19% improvement in satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2014
  • Mathematics at Exeter has built a reputation nationally for effective student-staff engagement.  Key successes include our student-designed third-year Group Project module, which is a hit with employers, and the co-creation of student-designed online learning resources that target the most challenging aspects of our programmes.

We’re really keen to share the great things that are happening in Maths with students, staff and stakeholders across the University. As a result we’re starting a new campaign called ‘Celebrating Exeter Maths’. We’ll be including some of the department’s successes in our newsletters, social media, on screens around campus and by putting up posters around our buildings.

Roy Osborne is the Maths Student-Staff Liaison Committee subject chair and is currently in his second year studying for an MMath degree. Roy says "Maths at Exeter is fantastic! The vast amount of research that goes on here is world-leading and the academic staff have a real passion for the discipline which makes studying here a real privilege"

Professor Mark Baldwin, Head of Mathematics at Exeter comments “Studying Mathematics at Exeter can lead to a variety of exciting professional careers. Many people think of mathematicians purely as academics, but our programmes also train students to apply mathematics to topics such as biomedicine, climate dynamics, and finance. With the increasing importance of technology, science, and computation, career prospects with a Mathematics degree are excellent.”
