Camborne School of Mines expert to feature on the BBC’s One Show

A geologist from the Camborne School of Mines will give his assessment about the potential global impact of Britain’s newest metal mine, when he appears on the BBC’s flagship magazine programme, the One Show.

Dr Robin Shail will feature on the popular show on Thursday 3 July, discussing the impact Devon’s Hemerdon tungsten mine, located near Plympton.

The £130 million mine, which is the first new metal mine in Britain in 40 years, is expected to start producing over 3,000 tonnes of tungsten and tin per year.

During the broadcast, Dr Shail will discuss the pivotal role that the mine will play on the global tungsten production market.

With around 80 per cent of the world’s tungsten production currently taking place in China, allowing it to dictate supply to the rest of the world, Dr Shail said the new mine could mean significant changes in the global market.

Speaking ahead of the show, he said: “This is a really significant moment for South West England. We are seeing the development of a major tungsten producer, that will be responsible for three or four per cent of global production of a metal that is critical to the UK and EU economies.”

“It is also going to mark the first significant tin production in South West England since the closure of South Crofty Mine in Cornwall in 1998.”

The One Show is hosted by Chris Evans, Alex Jones and Matt Baker, and features topical stories and celebrated studio guests.
