Students make final preparations for 2014 International Mining Games
Intrepid mining students are making their final preparations before embarking on a journey across the Atlantic to take part in a prestigious international competition.
Undergraduates from the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), are undertaking a stringent training regime to prepare them for the 36th International Mining Games 2014, which will be held in April.
Three teams from CSM - the only representatives from the UK taking part - will be competing in the illustrious contest, which will take place in the Midwestern US state of Missouri.
They will be hoping to at least match the exceptional results of 2013, when CSM secured gold in the surveying competition for the second year running.
A record number of CSM students had put themselves forward to compete in the Games, which attracts competitors from as far afield as Australia, Germany, Holland and Indonesia.
Brodie Leggett, a Mining Engineering student at CSM, said spirits were high within the camp, following the dedicated training schedule that has been followed over the previous months.
Brodie said: “We are already at a very high standard of both fitness and technique with three weeks still to go. If hard work does indeed payoff this will be our most successful year to date.
“This year we have a record breaking amount of students attending training and due to this depth of participation we have some very strong teams. We are taking three in total, two men’s teams and on co-ed, and we are looking to deliver our highest ranking yet, defend the surveying trophy and bring home more honours. “
Camborne School of Mines is located on the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, in Cornwall.
