Exeter student scoops national healthcare award

A hard working student from the South West has landed a prestigious national award for his outstanding achievements during training.

Richard Newman from the University of Exeter has been named the UK Diagnostic Student Radiographer of the Year. He received his prize from the Society of Radiographers at a glittering ceremony at the House of Commons in November.

"From the first year of his studies, it was clear that Richard was going to be an exceptional student," says Karen Knapp, director of education for medical imaging, who nominated him for the award. "But it is his personal qualities and clinical skills that really make him stand out."

Whilst on clinical placement, Richard demonstrated excellent time-keeping, professionalism and a great work ethic. "Quite simply, he never stops!" His computer prowess and his patience in sharing his knowledge with some of his more mature colleagues were particularly valued within the department.

"Richard approaches everything in a thoroughly professional way and has the ability to communicate in a thoughtful, considered way," says Karen.

"He genuinely cares for his patients and shows great empathy. He can make conversation with all of them, whether they are eight or 80, which is an important skill in healthcare.

"In summary, he is a delight to work with as he can always be relied on to do his best. He will make an exceptional radiographer and will be a great asset to the profession, wherever his career takes him in the future."

Karen added: "The House of Commons was a fitting venue for the prestigious award presentation.  Professor Lord Winston gave an inspirational talk prior to the presentation, sharing both stories from his early and more recent career as well as highlighting the valuable work undertaken by diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers. Pam Black, President of the Society of Radiographers shared a brief outline of each of the winners prior to Professor Lord Winston presenting them with their award.

"The medical imaging programme team at the University of Exeter had always thought Richard to be an exceptional student and are proud that this has been recognised at a national level."

Richard said he was "delighted and honoured" to be nominated for the award. "It is testament to the excellent teaching at the University of Exeter and the thorough training I received at Dorchester, Exeter and Yeovil hospitals."

Richard's award comes amongst other noteable success for Medical Imaging at the University of Exeter. Student Victoria Charles has been awarded the Forder Memorial prize for best student paper submitted at the UKRC congress, while Exeter is also been ranked 1st for Radiography in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014.
