Camborne School of Mines leaves 2013 Mining Games as surveying champions for second year running

Our team of Camborne School of Mines students retained their trophy from last year’s International Mining Games after taking home gold for the surveying competition.

In the surveying event, teams were given a starting point and were expected to report the coordinates of a finishing point using an old fashioned vernier transit. CSM showcased their accuracy and expertise at the event, leaving faculty and students in awe over their skills.

The men’s team also won second place for “Hand Mucking,” which involves running a one ton ore wagon down a 75’ track and filling it. The win ranked Exeter fourth out of 18 men’s teams.

Exeter claimed first place at the co-ed “Hand Mucking” competition, and beat the second-place team by over 30 seconds. The team then took home second place in the “Jackleg Drilling,” where teams drilled into vertical concrete with a Holmans 303 airleg drill. CSM’s co-ed team ranked second overall, keeping Exeter in excellent standing at the Games

“I’m extremely proud of the achievements of the students taking part in the Mining Games,” said Sam Hughes, a lecturer in Surveying at CSM. “It’s absolutely fantastic that [the team] retained the surveying trophy, becoming world champions for the second year running.”

CSM competed against more than 40 teams from around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. This year, the Games included schools that had never participated in the competition before, including teams from Brazil and South Africa.

The competition took place from March 13 to 17 on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, Colorado. We would like to congratulate the Camborne School of Mines for their sincere efforts and their level of dedication.

“It is a real testament to the quality of students we have at CSM and their ability to stick to our motto ‘work hard, play hard,’” adds Hughes. “They are blueprint students that will hopefully inspire future teams that take part in the Games.”
