Career award for University geologist

Professor Emeritus Peter Scott has received a career recognition award for his contribution to geology in the South West.

The Frederick Sherrell Career Recognition Award is given annually by the South West Group of the Geological Society to an individual who has made both a contribution to the understanding of the geology of South West England and the promotion of geology in the community. Frederick Sherrell was a pioneering engineering geologist in South West England, and the award in his name has been made since 2001. This year it was presented at the AGM of the South West group on 21 November.

Peter Scott is Emeritus Professor, having been appointed in 1992 to the Chair of Industrial Geology at Camborne School of Mines (CSM). His research and consultancy experiences are in the field of geology of Earth Resources, particularly Industrial Minerals, including construction materials and some metalliferous ores. Peter has extensive fieldwork experience in the UK and overseas, and has given training workshops in many developing countries. He continues to be active in teaching, research and consultancy in economic geology and industrial minerals, based at CSM.

Professor Scott said: “I am delighted to receive this award, which I feel acknowledges the contribution all CSM staff have made towards the high national and international reputation of geology in CSM and the university.”

Professor Frances Wall, Head of CSM, added: “Many congratulations to Peter. The award is well-deserved for his contribution to geological research on industrial minerals, teaching, and to local geological and geoconservation societies in South West England.”
