Exeter Engineer honoured with CIWEM President's Award

Professor David Butler has been awarded the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) President’s Award for 2012.

CIWEM aims to advance the science and practice of water and environmental management for the public benefit. Its activities promote education, training, study and research in this area, and support thousands of members worldwide. The President’s Award is given annually by the outgoing president, in recognition of ‘exceptional service to the work of the institution’.

David Butler has edited the CIWEM’s Water and Environment Journal for the past six years, in a period of expansion that has seen the journal reach record paper submissions, a growing impact factor and impressive non-member subscription levels. The journal is available in almost 6,000 organisations in the developing world and has a truly global reach.

Nick Reeves OBE, CIWEM’s Executive Director said:  "It has been a pleasure having David as Editor of the journal for the past six years and the increasing international interest and prestige of the journal are to his credit. We wish him the best as he continues his academic career and passes the baton to John Bridgeman."

David Butler is Professor of Water Engineering at the University of Exeter with some 25 years of experience in the water industry. He jointly leads the Centre for Water Systems, which has around 30 researchers working mainly in the areas of urban water, system optimisation and hydroinformatics.

He said:  "I immensely enjoyed my time as editor-in-chief of the Water and Environment Journal. They were times of great change including in publisher, in popularity, in reputation and in international reach. However, I am convinced that the future is bright for the journal and that it will continue to go from strength to strength. It is my great honour to accept this award from CIWEM’s president and I look forward to serving the institution in some other capacity in the future".
