Medical Imaging students present at national congress

Eight Medical Imaging students presented at the United Kingdom Radiological Congress (UKRC) recently in Manchester.

The UKRC is the largest gathering of diagnostic imaging professionals in the UK. Held this year at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, the event typically attracts over 3000 delegates. It encompasses the medical, scientific, educational and management issues which are of interest and relevance to all those involved in the diverse fields of radiological sciences. A wide range of workshops, exhibits and conference presentations are on offer, covering all aspects of diagnostic imaging and oncology, as well as radiology informatics and service delivery.

The third year students presented their final year research projects in pairs in the UKRC student session, which was chaired by Dr Karen Knapp from the University of Exeter. This was a great opportunity for our students to disseminate their work at national level, allowing them to improve their presentation skills and enhance their CVs in the process. This year’s student session included six presentations, four of which were given by Exeter students.

The proffered paper titles were:

  • ‘High impact sports significantly increase calcaneal bone health as measured by quantitative ultrasound.’
  • ‘Arm and leg dominance does not result in significant differences in quantitative ultrasound measurements of bone quality in a young normal population.’
  •  ‘A comparison of UK young adult reference data with manufacturer US reference data for the GE Lunar Insight.’
  • 'An investigation into the effect of information regarding relaxation techniques on claustrophobia related anxiety in a mock magnetic resonance scanner.'

Dr Karen Knapp, Senior Lecturer in Medical Imaging, said: “I would like to congratulate our students for all the hard work they have put into their presentations. They all performed to an excellent standard, and can be very proud of their achievements.”
