Emergency services using Packexe dispenser, developed jointly with X-AT in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Packexe and the University shortlisted for prestigious national award

Packexe SMASH, the latest innovation from Exeter based Packexe Limited, has been shortlisted for ‘New Product of the Year’ at the 2009 Growing Business Awards supported by the CBI and Real Business magazine.

The technology behind the application of the product was developed in partnership with Exeter Advanced Technologies (X-AT) in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

The awards are designed to celebrate the UK’s future entrepreneurs and are acknowledged to be one of the best business award events of the year. Judges include Dragons Den’s Theo Paphitis, chairman of Ryman, John Caudwell, founder of Phones 4 U and Andrew Haigh, managing partner, Entrepreneurs Client Group, Coutts & Co.

Launched in May 2009, Packexe SMASH is a unique film used by the Fire and Rescue services for glass management at the scene of road accidents. Its dispenser is integral to the efficacy of the product and enables accurate and quick application in time critical scenarios. It is the design technology and product development of the full Packexe SMASH system which has been shortlisted for the award.

Mike Felstead from X-AT in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, commented "We’ve worked with Packexe on the dispenser project from the beginning. Andy and his team already had a great range of products, but this application process represented a significant new challenge. The concept was clear from the beginning but it took a lot of testing and trialling before it was ready for market. Packexe are worthy finalists for these awards and we are delighted to have been part of such a successful project."

Packexe Ltd added “We have worked closely with the team at X-AT over the past few years on the development of new products, forming strong links with the education sector is important for us in order to encourage the development of future generations in business. The technology facilities and skills at X-AT have complimented Packexe’s commitment to innovation and development”.

The awards ceremony will be held on 26 November.

Date: 20 November 2009
