Friday 23 Mar 2012Colloquium: Reimagining the Future with Graphene

Dr. Saverio Russo - University of Exeter

Newman F 12:00-13:00

Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern, is an indefinitely large aromatic molecule, of unique interest in the field of transparent organic electronics. This is a transparent material where charge carriers exhibit mobilities higher than Si at room temperature. However, the energy dispersion of graphene is gap-less, and this would limit its applications in electronic devices. At the same time, the use of graphene as a truly transparent conductor is also an open challenge because the lowest values of resistivity demonstrated so far are above the values of commercially available indium tin oxide.

In this talk I will review different ways to engineer the electrical properties of graphene to open a tuneable energy-gap or to make it a highly conductive and optical transparent material suitable for future flexible and bendable electronic applications.
