Monday 23 Jan 2012: Applied Maths Seminar - Synchronization in Real Networks: Chaos, Communication and Chimeras

We explore synchronization in networks of coupled optoelectronic oscillators in our laboratory. Numerical models are developed and simulations are compared with experimental observations to understand how real networks synchronize and desynchronize as coupling coefficients are varied. Convergence to synchrony is found to depend on the network topology. We find that networks with the same number of nodes and links, and identical eigenvalues of the coupling matrix can exhibit fundamentally different approaches to synchrony, with rather different statistical features.
