Thursday 15 Dec 2011MCS colloquium - Dynamical invariants of group automorphisms

Prof. Tom Ward - University of East Anglia

Harrison 203 15:00-16:00

Automorphisms of compact metric groups are a rich source of dynamical systems which are highly structured and as a result readily amenable to analysis. A natural way to view them is to study them via various dynamical invariants (entropy, zeta function, and so on) and in each case to describe the range and the fibres of the invariant. This reasonable project turns out to be difficult, and the main features of this picture are not known. The talk will introduce this point of view and explain some of the important examples and problems associated with it.

******** This MCS colloquium will be followed by tea / coffee / cake in Harrison Foyer from 4pm **************
