Monday 14 May 2018The dynamics of the 2013/14 winter extremes in the UK and North America

Peter Watson - University of Oxford

Harrison 170 14:00-15:00

In the 2013/14 winter, the eastern USA was exceptionally cold, the UK suffered severe flooding and the "Ridiculously Resilient Ridge" continued to bring drought to California. Studies have suggested that the tropics had an influence on these events, and I will review the evidence for this from observations and modelling, with a focus on the role of elevated sea surface temperatures in the tropical West Pacific. I will also discuss evidence for links between the North American and UK extreme weather.
