Thursday 06 Mar 2014: Where do Galois representations come from?
Kevin Buzzard - Imperial College

lI will start with a brief description of the absolute Galois
group of the rationals and then I'll try to explain why we might want to
try and understand this group, and how representation theory might be
the way to do it. I will then state some very profound conjectural ideas
due to Langlands about where representations of this group might come
from, and finally a p-adic variant of these conjectures due to Toby
Gee and myself.
