Wednesday 23 Feb 2011Age spreads in star forming regions?

Prof. Rob Jeffries - Keele University, UK

Physics, 4th Floor interaction area 11:00-12:00

The reality or not of the luminosity and age spreads seen in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagrams of very young clusters is an important question both for star formation theorists and for those using ages determined from the HR diagram to investigate star formation histories. I will review the evidence for and against the reality of these age spreads and discuss some new observational tests that suggest the luminosity spreads are largely genuine, but that the inferred age spreads are not.
