Dr Gavyn Rollinson
Experimental Officer (Acting Lab Manager), CSM Analytical Lab
Telephone: 01326 371830
I am a geologist that predominantly carries out research and supports research for both staff and students. Teaching and student supervision forms part of my role which includes students of all levels and staff/external clients when required. I am a point of contact for commercial clients that use the CSM analytical facility and manage commercial activities.
My main responsibility is managing the QEMSCAN®, an advanced automated scanning electron microscope that analyses inorganic samples such as rock and soil (the only instrument of its type in a university in Europe and one of a handful in a university globally). Using QEMSCAN® I have analysed and processed a wide range of samples including soils, mineral concentrates (oxides, sulphides), contaminated muds (incl. tailings), slags, Egyptian cosmetics, laterites, bauxites, ceramics, heavy minerals sands, dust samples (atmospheric, volcanic), meteorite, trace ore samples (silver, gold, Ta/Nb, Pt-Pd), igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic geological samples and other specialist applications. I am involved in all stages of QEMSCAN® work from sample preparation to instrument operation, data processing and database development.
Additional responsibilities include providing support (research, teaching and commercial) for other analytical instruments such as the low vacuum scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. I am currently the secretary for the Applied Mineralogy Group (AMG) that is part of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
