Our research

The Camborne School of Mines has active and successful research focused in two groups Responsible Mining and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Renewable Energy.

Renewable Energy

Works very much in an inter-disciplinary manner with expertise and capacity over a range of engineering and science areas along with Energy Policy, but is also in close collaborations with ecologists and environmental scientists. Particular areas of note are marine renewable energy; power conditioning and grid interconnection; solar; energy storage, carbon capture and storage and biomass (anaerobic digestion). Energy policy research is focused on; renewable heat; marine energy and technology innovation.

Responsible Mining and sustainable use of natural resources

The challenges facing the mining industry include not just finding enough mineral resources to meet demand but to produce those minerals in a way that causes least harm, and conveys maximum advantage, to the environment and to society. Working together in multidisciplinary teams that can include mining engineers, minerals engineers, geotechnical engineers, geologists and mineralogists, and with colleagues elsewhere in the university, especially in areas such as corporate social responsibility. Many projects are carried out in collaboration with external industry colleagues and with national and international research partners.
