Biniam is a Research Engineer and had over 10 years’ experience as a researcher in multidisciplinary projects, teacher, research engineering in the application of findings from academia to solve real problems and challenges in the water sector. Biniam is a STREAM Research Engineer at the University of Exeter and Scottish Water perusing his Engineering Doctorate funded by EPSRC. His current project focuses on the trade-off between quality of the environment, reduction of operational costs, and greenhouse gas emissions from the wastewater systems. He uses a holistic approach in managing the wastewater systems by integrating river catchment systems, sewer networks, and wastewater treatment plant operation control.

Research Interests

Biniam specialises in wastewater systems management, including integration and control of the system to trade-off environment quality, energy, and greenhouse gas emission. His research interest covers;

     •  sustainable wastewater systems
     •  real-time management of urban water and wastewater systems
     •  integrated catchment management
     •  multidisciplinary approaches to managing water resources
     •  valuation of ecosystem services
