Module title:Magmatism and Metamorphism
Module codeCSM2910
Module lecturers:Prof Ben Williamson
Module credits:15

This module will provide you with the tools you need to interpret the mechanisms of formation of rocks that form as a result of magmatic, metamorphic and metasomatic processes. As such, you will become familiar with the fundamental principles underpinning geochemistry, phase diagrams and thermodynamics, as applied to igneous, metamorphic and hydrothermal systems. You will use this learning to reconstruct quantitatively the crystallization history of igneous rocks and the processes and environments of metamorphism. Field classes will allow you to ‘see’ these processes ‘frozen’ into the rock record.

This module is suitable for students specialising in geological subjects and will develop transferable skills. The module Magmatic and Metamorphic Rocks (CSM2051 ) is a pre-requisite requirement. Magmatism and Metamorphism will provide the foundation for the Year 3 15 credit modules Mineral Deposit Geology (CSM3046 ), Exploration Techniques (CSM3151 ), Volcanology (CSM3070 ), Applied Field Geology (CSM3048 ) and Geology Overseas Field Class (CSM3068 ).
