Programme overview

Mathematics with Finance utilises the expertise from both the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences and The Business School.

This programme provides invaluable mathematics skills alongside a theoretical background in finance. It introduces advanced financial techniques such as derivatives pricing, risk management and portfolio management. Our graduates find employment with financial institutions such as banks, insurance companies, pension funds, investment and unit trusts, as well as stock-broking and financial advisory work.

This combination of skills makes graduates from this programme very attractive to a wide range of employers. This course is designed to be relevant, innovative and challenging. You will receive research-led teaching, meaning that you will study and learn with the experts - those who are shaping the field of study.

Choosing Mathematics at Exeter gives you:

  • The flexibility and freedom to choose a wide range of optional modules - enabling you to sample various disciplines and specialise if desired.
  • Research led teaching - all academic staff are active, internationally recognised researchers across a wide range of mathematical topics.
  • First-class equipment and excellent facilities - a £2.8 million investment including a major expansion of computer facilities and completely refitted lecture theatres.
  • Staff committed to helping you make the best mathematics career choices - you'll be guided at every step to help you choose the best mathematics option for you.

The teaching on my degree has been excellent, just how I expected. The lectures are interesting and focused, and the lecturers are always happy to answer questions in class, or during their office hours. Some lecturers use group discussions for certain topics which involve everyone and make for more interactive learning, and we have group presentations and coursework which all take the pressure off at exam time!

The ‘with Finance’ part of my degree means that I don’t do exactly half and half like most other universities offered, Instead I choose my modules more flexibly and this means my degree is tailored to what I want.

Our department is very supportive and there is lots of extra help which I wasn’t aware of before I got here; there are weekly ‘maths surgeries’ where postgrads are available to help you, a buddy scheme where first years can meet with a mentor if they wish, and tutors who go out of their way to offer help. There is also a learning resources centre which is a great place to work by yourself, or there are group rooms which you and your friends can book to do work together as well as plenty of computers available.
