Dr Ryan Stuart Edginton

Communities Engagement Manager: RaNT Programme

Ryan completed his MPhys undergraduate masters degree at the University of Exeter in 2013, following a two-year research project investigating the impact of apoptosis on the electric dipole potential of the red blood cell membrane.

He recently obtained his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Francesca Palombo, Prof. Nick Stone and Prof. C. Peter Winlove at Exeter; studying the hierarchical structure and mechanics of collagen and elastin under different conditions of hydration. Subsequently as a research assistant, he has supported spectral investigations of the neurodegenerative disease, Tauopathy, and of mucins as a diagnostic marker of gastro-intestinal cancers. He has experience of tissue cryosectioning, and is practised in the application of polarised micro-Raman and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopies, together with ATR-FTIR, polarisation resolved micro-FTIR imaging, and quasi-static mechanical testing.

During his doctoral studies, Ryan performed the role of Outreach Officer for the Biomedical Physics Group, and was an academic Instructor to the Gold medal winning University of Exeter International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) teams. He is passionate about promoting interdisciplinary collaboration as the future of scientific research, and inspiring curiosity in young people. . . and in those whose cells aren't dividing as efficiently as they maybe used to!
