CEMPS presents Chinese New Year 2017

Friday 27th January saw the celebration of the Year of the Rooster in the Harrison and Physics buildings at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus.

Chinese New Year has been celebrated for centuries all over the world and signifies the start of the lunisolar calendar. Legend has it that the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the ‘Year’ which comes out to harm people, animals and property. However the ‘Year’ fears the colour red, fire and loud sounds and this is why it is now tradition to protect one’s self by posting red Dui Lian outside their front door, launching fireworks and hanging lanterns. Many other traditions have developed over the years including cleaning the house from top to bottom before festivities, to help sweep away any bad luck before the New Year comes and handing out red envelopes to the elderly and the young with money inside, to supress evil and keep them healthy.

The celebration in the college saw the handout of fortune cookies and red envelopes to all attendees. Within each envelope was a rooster to signify the current zodiac year, and for a lucky few there was either a silver or gold rooster, winning them a voucher prize.

The College was also very lucky to have the help of Mechanical Engineer, Doug Fung, who used traditional Chinese brush pens to assist in writing the names of the students in Chinese. The stalls were accompanied with information on the animals of the zodiac and tangram puzzles for students to solve.
