CSM student wins prestigious scholarship

Postgraduate student James Heslington, from the Camborne School of Mines, has secured a prestigious international scholarship, it has been announced.

James has been bestowed with the 2018/19 Global Mapper Scholarship from geographic software specialists Blue Marble.

The Surveying and Land/Environmental Management student, based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, scooped a $500 prize for winning the scholarship.

In order to secure the scholarship, James was required to submit a research project that utilised the Global Mapper software.

James’ project focused on the representation and interpretation of geophysical data, with special emphasis on the former Poldice mining site in Cornwall, using a variety of techniques, including electromagnetics, geochemical sampling and topographical surveying.

The project’s conclusions highlighted issues concerning legacy mine sites, and the potential problems that could arise from the development of the immediate surrounding areas.

In his citation, James was praised for his “in-depth knowledge of the principles of geophysical analysis, his clear and concise communication, and his creative use of Global Mapper”.

Speaking after receiving the scholarship, James said: “It’s a real honour to have secured this scholarship.  I was able to use some of the work I have been carrying out as part of my studies for the submission, which was a great experience and really shows the quality not only of Camborne School of Mines, but also my MSc Surveying and Land/ Environmental Management course."

As a part of the scholarship, James was asked to give an online presentation of his project on Thursday, March 21st 2019.
