Tuesday 02 Nov 2021Non-hydrostatic rotating shallow-water and MHD flows

Prof. David Dritschel - University of St Andrews

Zoom 13:30-15:30

I will discuss a more general geophysical shallow-water model that permits non-hydrostatic effects. In simulations of turbulence, it is found that non-hydrostatic effects can strongly suppress inertia--gravity wave emission. I will also discuss a recent MHD extension and show some new results for the impact of a magnetic field on an initially Gaussian vortex. This is joint work with Reza Jalali (St Andrews) and Steve Tobias (Leeds).
