Tuesday 08 Dec 2020[Journal Club] Title: Ekster - a method to simulate star formation with low-resolution gas

Star forming regions are often found in spiral arms of galaxies. Such regions are best simulated including their surroundings. These simulations therefore contain a large amount of mass, making SPH simulations that can resolve the formation of individual stars impractical.

We present Ekster, a new AMUSE-based method that combines lower resolution SPH with star formation and stellar dynamics. With Ekster, we simulate 500x500 pc sections of spiral galaxies and study the formation of star clusters therein.
