Join us for an interactive family-friendly evening of fun, facts and physics about how sound in the sea affects the marine environment and its inhabitants.



This lecture will highlight how scientists at the UK Hydrographic Office use environmental information to understand and help protect the marine environment. The lecture will be an interactive event, enlisting help from all audience members.



Biographies



Tom Cropper is a climate scientist turned civil servant, who currently heads up a team of marine scientists at the UK Hydrographic Office. Tom has worked at the Universities of Sheffield, Lisbon, Cardiff and very briefly worked at Exeter, and his team specialises in providing scientific environmental information to a variety of different users.



Tom and his team (many of which are Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Ambassadors) are passionate about science communication and have been involved in a variety of outreach events across the south west in recent years.



Stephanie Allen is a Senior Marine Biologist at the UK Hydrographic Office. Stephanie undertook her degree of Marine Biology and Oceanography at Plymouth University and her PhD at the University of Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre, which examined long-term changes to oceanic plankton. She has collaborated internationally with several institutes including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Throughout her career she has contributed to outreach as a STEM Ambassador across a variety of audiences.
