Wednesday 16 Oct 2019[Seminar] Contemporary explorations of exoplanetary atmospheres in 3D

Dr Graham Lee - University of Oxford

4th floor, Physics building 14:00-15:00

With the beginning of the JWST era rapidly upon us, clarity into the nature of exoplanet atmospheres is set to expand significantly. Several recent studies have suggested the importance of considering the 3D nature of exoplanets and how the 3D structure gives rise to the observed properties and characterisation of an exoplanet's atmosphere.

In this talk, I will review some of the biases present when interpreting observational data using 1D methods and approximations when compared to multi-dimensional techniques. I will present some results and ongoing projects using the 3D global circulation model (GCM), Exo-FMS, currently in development in the Oxford group. Additionally, I will present a 3D Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code, CMCRT, able to accurately post-process observables of 3D GCM simulations.
