Rapid growth in computer power has enabled a similar increase in the spatial and temporal resolution of environmental models. For example, for the first time in our history, we are now routinely forecasting the weather in greater detail than we are generally able to observe it. A gap between the resolution of forecasts and observations is opening up, and it is not practical or economically feasible to close it simply by expanding conventional operational observation networks. Fortunately, new and unconventional sources of high-volume observational data are emerging - many as a result of mass-market technology. These opportunities can be categorised as third-party, opportunistic, or crowd-sourced. Examples will be described of each, along with the necessary conditions for their successful development and exploitation.



Bio - degree in physics, then the last 42 years working for the Met Office in a wide variety of roles. Cloud physics, atmospheric aerosols, instrument development, forecaster display systems, data processing, Weather radar. Then Head of Observations R&D from 2009-2015. For the last four years – Research Fellow tasked with finding new sources of high-volume, low cost data for assimilation into weather forecast models
