Abstract:
Extreme levels of water availability with recurrent floods and unavailability with prolonged periods of drought have become a serious challenge for Pakistan. During this talk, Dr Cheema will speak about the role of the Rural Support Programmes Network, a network of 11 Rural Support Programmes spread all over the country, in mitigating the effects of ongoing water crises. In particular, he will highlight the role of social mobilisation strategy of the Rural support Programmes aimed at the capacity building of households to improve the quality of life of the poor people in rural areas. He will draw on his work with rural communities in the Sindh province of Pakistan where he works as Team Leader Research of a European Union-funded programme called Sindh Union Council and Community Economic Strengthening Support Programme (SUCCESS).
Biography:
Dr Abdur Rehman Cheema is a Chevening Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Studies, the University of Oxford. He has a multidisciplinary education with a doctorate and a postgraduate diploma in development studies from Massey University, New Zealand (2012), MBA in Human Resource Management (2004) and Masters in Economics (2002) from Pakistan. His research interests broadly focus on understanding the development linkages with vulnerability, disasters, governance, climate change and poverty.
