Monday 16 Jan 2017: An accelerating high-latitude jet in Earth's core

I will present the recent discovery of a high-latitude jet stream within the Earth’s liquid outer core, which was made possible by combining the very latest satellite observations of the geomagnetic field with a mathematical model of core dynamics. The jet has increased in magnitude by a factor of three over the period 2000–2016 to about 40 km/yr , and is now much stronger than typical large-scale flows inferred for the core. The current accelerating phase may be part of a longer-term east-west fluctuation of the jet over historical periods.
