p-divisible groups are used to study abelian varieties in char-acteristic p > 0. We explain recent results on the classi?cation of p-divisible groups by displays. Cerednik proved that Shimura curves may be uniformized by the p-adic upper half plan ?. We give new examples of Shimura varieties which admit such a uniformization. To prove this we use the results on displays. This is joint work with Kudla and Rapoport.
