Rob Hygate - Africa Water Enterprises

Harrison 170 14:30-15:30

Over the last few decades, charities, trusts and governments have tried to help developing countries bring clean water to rural areas by installing solar pumped bore hole water systems. Where they have failed dramatically is to ensure that these systems are maintained and operated in a sustainable way. EWATERpay has been developed by Rob and Africa Water Enterprises to enable prepayment of public water taps. The eWATERtap is NFC enabled (like the Oyster card) and allows the tap to operate by deducting prepaid credit from the NFC tag. By empowering the collection of small prepayments for water enables the system to be sustained. Rob will show the real problems faced by rural communities in Africa and will present the business model that will revolutionise the way aid is sustained.
