In this talk we discuss the birational section conjecture over function fields in characteristic zero, and the possibility of reducing the conjecture over finitely generated fields over Q to the case of number fields. The approach is based on recent work by Mohamed Saidi, and we use a reduction argument and a local-global principle, assuming the finiteness of certain Tate-Shafarevich groups. We will outline the method and where the difficulties lie.
