Wednesday 18 Nov 2015Seminar: Radial Migration in Spiral Galaxies

Dr Victor Debattista - University of Central Lancashire

Physics, 4th floor 14:00-15:00

I introduce the concept of migration produced by transient spirals in disc galaxies. I present results of simulations that include this process and show the effects that such migration has. These include flat age-metallicity relations, age upturns at large radii in discs, reversal of the metallicity distribution functions skewness and possibly the contamination of the thick disc by stars moving outwards. I discuss these effects and provide evidence for migration via transient spirals in the Milky Way and in external galaxies. In the era of Gaia, accounting for the effect of radial migration is vital for a correct Galactic archaeology.
