Wednesday 26 Nov 2014Seminar: Asteroseismology: Measuring stellar rotation in Sun-like stars

Dr Guy Davies - University of Birmingham

Physics, 4th floor 14:00-15:00

Through star-spot modulation and spectroscopic rotational broadening we can measure the rotation of stellar surfaces. Furthermore, using asteroseismology we can infer the internal rotation of stars. Together the two measures can be used as complementary observations to help us understand how rotation in a star evolves. In this talk I will discuss how, through a phenomenological approach, we can place constraints on the evolution of stellar rotation in Sun-like stars. In addition, I will discuss how asteroseismology and asteroseismic rotation are playing an important role in the study of exoplanets.
