A study of terrestrial planetary atmospheric circulation regimes using simplified GCMs based on PUMA (Portable University Model of the Atmosphere) is presented. By running a series of controlled experiments, circulation regime diagrams are established in parameter spaces built by carefully chosen dimensionless parameters. Various circulation regimes ranging from equatorial super-rotation to multiple zonal jets are presented, with an emphasis on their parametric dependence and corresponding mechanisms of formation and maintenance. Implications for the observation and characterisation of exoplanets are discussed as well based on our regime diagrams.
