In this talk, we present a new conjecture concerning Rubin-Stark elements. We prove that the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (for Tate motives) implies our conjecture. As applications, we give another proof of Darmon's conjecture on cyclotomic units, which was recently solved by Mazur and Rubin via a method of Kolyvagin systems, and proofs of several conjectures of Gross for abelian fields.
