Monday 16 Jun 2014: Making Galaxies in a Cosmological Context
Dr Greg Stinson - MPIA, Germany
Physics, 4th floor 14:00-15:00
The main challenge for galaxy formation models is to limit how many baryons turn into stars. Observations indicate that the most efficient galaxies only turn 25% of baryons into stars. I will present hydrodynamic simulations that have limited star formation to this level using stellar feedback. I will examine the impact of stellar feedback on other galaxy properties, like the formation of the thick disk and hot gaseous halo. Using the comparisons with observations, I will consider whether stellar feedback is the most likely answer to limiting star formation or whether models should consider physics like limiting the rate at which gas cools into galaxies.
