The Specht modules are an important family of modules defined for the symmetric group in any characteristic. The main problem in the representation theory of the symmetric group is to determine the composition factors of the Specht modules. In recent years there has been considerable interest in the related problem of determining all homomorphisms between two Specht modules. Assuming no background knowledge, I'll give a survey of results and applications.
